Steven, who had worked with students at the Watsonville school for several years, approached the school administrators, who were eager to participate in the project. Steven worked with the university students during the year-long project, coordinating with the school, soliciting contributions of materials from the community, and documenting each step. Steven made sure that the project was designed to meet the needs of the students, staff and faculty at Watsonville.

Jessy, a science student, designed projects that focused on nature and biodiversity, transforming the school grounds into a nature reserve. While working on the garden, the Watsonville students learned about organic farming, ecology, watersheds, ecosystems and native plants. They learned about the richness of the earth’s treasures – the variety of plants and animals – and how they exist in connection with the earth’s seasons and climates. Jessy designed a curriculum that uses the garden to teach science – in and out of the traditional classroom – and can be used for years to come. This is a way to guarantee the future maintenance of the garden.
