Project:
Mosaic Stepping Stones
A large supply of white tiles were donated to us that the students glazed
a variety of colors. After glazing, the tiles were broken up into pieces
that were used to create stepping stones throughout the garden as well
as a circle around the sundial.
Materials: Glaze, tiles, brushes.
Procedure:
Glaze: Mix the glaze and paint it onto the tiles. For a solid color,
use two coats. Fire in kiln.
Mosaic: First, find an already-made stepping stone, any size or shape.
To make your own, pour Quickcrete mixture into the bottom of a small
cardboard box. Let the cement dry and harden, then remove the box. The
tiles can be placed directly into the wet cement, or after it dries.
After
it dries, or starting with an already-made cement block continue as
follows: Break the tiles into pieces by dropping them or hitting with
a hammer (wearing, of course, proper eye protection). Apply a medium
layer of Thinset to the flat surface of the cement. With a toothed trowel
(cardboard with zigzag teeth cut into it works just as well), score
the thinset. Place the tile pieces onto the Thinset in the desired pattern.
Try to get the tile pieces fairly close together, but not touching.
After they are all set, liberally work grout into the cracks between
the tiles, then wipe away the excess grout from the tops of the tiles.
Let dry.
