Project:
Copper Leaves
This project was done with the students to complete a sculpture of my
creation. From rebar, I made a “tree” to be placed in the
garden with hooks on the branches. The copper pieces were hung off these
hooks as “leaves.” Extra hooks were added, giving the students
the opportunity to hang “leaves” in the future.
Materials: Copper sheets, cut into various shapes and sizes (the edges
must be melted with the brazing torch so they are no longer sharp);
metal stamps; hammers; nails; wood or a thick magazine; steel wool;
etching tool.
Procedure: I asked the students to think of a dream or a wish or a word
about which they feel strongly. With the metal stamps, they put this
word on the copper piece. To do this, place the copper onto the wood.
Hold the metal stamp in place and hit hard with the hammer. The imprint
of the letter will be left. Continue until the word or phrase if finished.
Finish by decorating the rest of the piece as you wish. Some students
used an etching tool to do this. Some students buffed the surface of
their leaves with steel wool to make them shine. When complete, make
a hole with the nail and attach it to the hooks on the tree.
