Global Consonances II    Sunday Afternoon
September 15      noon to 6:00 PM      Custom House Plaza

The lute is an instrument laden with symbolic significance that marks like an acoustic icon the convergence of Asia, Europe, and Africa as they come together to form the irregular circumference of the Mediterranean. The Arabic lute or oud tradition has remained basically unchanged for centuries after having bloomed from Baghdad to Andalusia. Anouar Brahem has explored the most secret depths of sound and pondered long and lovingly the legacy of the artistic music of the Islamic world.
Brahem's questing towards the East, from Tunisia and the Arab world towards Asia, from Turkey to India, suggests a restlessness of spirit that has never been allayed. All this combines in Brahem's music to create a sublime and ethereal sound, his personal trademark.
"All through their meanderings these three musicians rely solely on their instruments to recreate the required mood and sense of place. The music delineates the mournful beauty of a desert landscape from a myriad different angles."    -Songlines
