"FROM GALWAY TO GALICIA, THE CELTIC SHORES" |
|
Altramar specializes
in the music of the Medieval Era,
sharing historical repertory in the context of human experience, and
evoking the vibrant tapestry of medieval culture. Altramar, in the Occitan
language of the troubadours, was the name given to the Near Eastern
lands that lay "over the sea," where crusade and trade resulted
in the rich cultural interchange of East and West.

In the Middle Ages, the windswept
European shores of the Atlantic Ocean represented not the periphery but
the very heart of the known world, providing the means by which merchants,
sailors, monks, and soldiers shared communications, conquest, scholarship,
and trade. News of kings, tales of saints, and stories, songs, and tunes
were carried by coasting sailors to every shore washed by the Atlantic
waves. In this program, Altramar medieval music ensemble sets sail on a voyage of discovery across the ocean of geography, time, and memory, to rediscover the ancient Celtic cultures of the Atlantic whose influences are still felt in the poetry, music, and history of Iberia, Galia, Brittania, and Hibernia. |
