San
Francisco Taiko Dojo
The Zen of Drumming |
||
Grand
Master Seiichi Tanaka founded the first Taiko group in America,
San Francisco Taiko Dojo, in 1968. With the creation of this group,
Sensei Tanaka brought Taiko as an art form to the United States. Since
ancient times, Taiko has been a part of the culture of Japan. Taiko
reflected the spiritual beliefs of the people and it was used to drive
away evil spirits and offer thanks for a bountiful harvest. Sadly, the
spiritual side of Taiko faded.
Seiichi
Tanaka and the San Francisco Taiko Dojo have redeveloped Taiko from
its primitive folk arts roots into a powerful, sophisticated synthesis
of rhythm, harmony, and body movement. Today, it is a rigorous mental,
physical, and martial arts training combined with musical talent to
form a unique, resonant style. |

The
San Francisco Taiko Dojo is not strictly a performance organization, but
rather a school. The Dojo teaches not only the skillful playing of percussion
instruments, but also the discipline of mind and body in the spirit of
complete respect and unity among the drummers. It is also the ultimate
challenge to reach the point of unity of the drummer's spirit with the
spirit of the drum. |
