RUAP / Community / Interview with Adan Castillo
Adan Castillo is an eighth grader going into his freshman year of high school. He was born and raised in the city of Watsonville in the Pajaro Valley near Santa Cruz. He is an avid artist and talented athlete.

Adan participated in an exploratory series of arts workshops at RUAP partner Watsonville Community School in Watsonville. There, with the aid of Javier Gonzales, Steven Russell, and a small group of students Adan engaged in arts projects that emphasized an artistic exploration of his youth culture and it’s positive impact on the community.
Steven Russell, RUAP Community Liaison, interviewed Adan Castillo:
SR: So Adan, how old are you?

AC: I’m fourteen.
SR: How long have you lived in Watsonville?

AC: All my life.
SR: How long have you been going to Watsonville Community?

AC: Four months or so.
SR: What grade are you in?

AC: I just barely graduated from eighth grade. So I’m going to be a freshman.

SR: Let’s talk about your art. What are some of the things you like to draw?

AC: Letters…I don’t know, I guess you could say graffiti.
SR: What do you think about Watsonville Community School?

AC: Pretty good eh. Because they help me out a lot with like my attitude and all that. Since I got here I changed like my personality and stuff. I started acting different. Priscilla helped me a lot.
SR: So you enjoy coming here to Watsonville Community School.

SAC: Yeah, pretty much
SR: What are some of the things you like about it that are different than other schools?

AC: The art class, eh! The art class.
SR: What are some of the things you got into during some of the sessions?

AC: Working with the computers and the website you know, you remember right?

SR: Oh so you like visiting the campus and using Photoshop and the other programs. What other things interested you?

AC: The assignments that you gave us. Yeah… I don’t know.

SR: Did you get more out of the graffiti oriented assignments than the classic drawing assignments?

AC: Yeah I think I did.
SR: What did you think about working with Baktun 12 Spoken Word workshops?

AC: To not be embarrassed. They showed us a lot of stuff like … I don’t know how to explain…just do what they do. Get up on stage and not be embarrassed by what other people say. Just do it. Express yourself.
SR: Do you think you bonded well with the other students in the art group?

AC: Yeah.
SR: Like who?

AC: Rigo (Rodrigo Ochoa). He’s pretty cool eh.
SR: Who’s work inspired you in the group?

AC: Um, Luis’s work. He’s pretty good. And Rigo’s too. He can do some crazy characters. He gets down eh.
SR: What do you want to do in the future with your art?

AC: I want to learn how to make it more realistic. Like draw people, animals, real things, not just like letters and stuff.
SR: What do you see yourself being able to do in say, five years?

AC: I’ll probably be drawing people and stuff and working with computers. Definitely working with computers.
SR: Well thank you for your time.

AC: No problem man.
